Lamentably, many entrepreneurs develop an ineffective business card and lose out on it’s business generating ability.
Prefer to avoid that? Here’s how…
I’m often asked whether there is a hidden secret to a super effective business card — ONE thing that decides whether it will produce a lot of new business.
There definitely is.
The trick to a highly effective card is — in basic terms — it has to be ENGAGING!
You may want to read that last sentence again.
The have that one powerful characteristic.
For a business card to achieve what it is intended to do, it must be able to engage a person for at least a short while.
The unfortunate truth is, the reason most fall flat is due to the fact that they don;t hold the attention of the recipient for long enough to make any impression.
Believe it or not, an interesting study proved that nearly 2/3 of business cards got nothing more than a cursory glance before the recipient put them away, permitting it to make little to no impression at all. (read: tucked in a pocket, never to see daylight again)
You see “common” content – that is, a name, contact information, a logo, and other general content – lacks the capacity to make an impression on anyone. None of these details encourage a prospect to hire you (or to show your card to another party). None of them make you memorable either. What’s worse yet, these details really don’t give anyone much need to check out the card either! Let’s be honest, it’s not like they are going to memorize the phone number right?
This is why a standard card that features nothing but a name, logo, and contact information goes immediately into someone’s pocket without so much as another glance. That’s all you need to digest that much information! It’s ample time to say, “all right, if I actually plan to contact this person, I know how.”
On the contrary, when a card positively engages someone, looks unique, says something different, and subliminally forces them to focus on it and take note of a distinct message – well, something incredible happens.
It changes from “contact card”… to sales tool!
It becomes a little ad, and earns the ability to ENCOURAGE someone toward a precise choice or action. Specifically, to choose to do business with you!
Actually, a call to action is an important, albeit often missing ingredient of most business cards. To be effective yours should guide prospects to take the next step — ie. requesting more information, watching a presentation on your website, calling for a free report, coming in for a special offer, or whatever else you can dream up.
THAT is how you transform a prospect into a customer. Make an impression. Be noteworthy. And supply them with an excellent motivation to do business with you!
In a nutshell, if you need , don’t be satisfied with a “contact card”. Decide instead upon a powerful little sales tool!
Make yours attention-grabbing… and engaging.
It can be accomplished with:
- a special material (for instance wood, or transparent plastic)
- compelling content on the front or back of the card
- a compelling call to action
- a powerful headline
- awesome illustration or style
- cool effects like embossing, spot gloss , or lenticular motion
Present more than just contact info and a logo, and make certain your card can’t be put away till someone has gotten a cold hard look at it.
There isn’t any easier way to keep your business card out of the garbage and working diligently to generate customers on your behalf.
