Being able to Work From Home is a great advantage for someone who is blessed enough to have the option to do it. Many, like myself are able to do so because we do Online Jobs by being employed by an Internet Business and so have no need to be sited in any one location. There are many things we can do that our office bound colleagues are denied such as watching the Open Golf when the afternoon matches are on, doing the school run in both directions, not having to be concerned with journeying conditions or the weather first thing in the morning.
Naturally I did not always Work From Home. The majority of my career to date has been mostly in an office rather than Online Jobs and I’m blessed that I have been part of four major IT development projects in that period, and it’s pretty much true that there mainly because the toolset that we used to write the systems is mostly extinct in United Kingdom, though still popular in some parts of Northern Europe and Australia.
The first of these was when I was working for a large energy utility in Dorking, Surrey. The idea was to team up two regional companies from the London and South East areas who each had a need to update current but very ancient IBM based computer systems. The development toolset called the Information Engineering Facility (IEF) was designed to deliver fast, accurate and reliable systems across a complete business and so was the best, if expensive option and a brand new office building was leased to contain the entire development team in one place. We had a go ahead can-do outlook and great comradeship. It was my first actual job in IT and I loved it.
However, the nature of what we were doing made the other regional companies within the utility company nervous and look at themselves and their needs and many felt threatened by what could occur when our project were complete and delivered. Would they be made to take them too or would the systems be centralised for the whole business? It was decided to analyse the IT needs for all regions and a study was commissioned which came to the view that the future was most sensibly served using an ICL mainframe platform and as soon as that choice was made we were finished. It was a decision based completely on the corporate politics of people who worried that they were going to be ]forced out and got their retaliation in first, and not a lot to do with the quality of systems to run the business in the longer term.
What happened subsequently was that it was decided that systems from the West Midlands, an ICL region would be used for all regions and the future IT would be operated from Solihull for the whole business. Some people opted to remain with the business and took the plunge to move to the Midlands while many more, fantastic redundancy plans for people to go away.
Then there was no such thing as an Internet Business. In fact, although it existed in a very basic form, very few knew much about the internet at all. It was just beginning to become available and I used some of my redundancy cash to buy a new pc anyway and it came with a modem and software to connect to an internet service provider, but it was so basic then that you didn’t even get a name in your email address – not that there were very many people to email anyway.
But it was possible to see in fact the way things turned out was without doubt for the best for me. The job I had left was mostly working on mainframe based systems, and I would go on to do so for years ahead, but the platform of choice was always going to be internet based once the technology allowed.
